Ball Valve Selection Guide: Material Recommendations for Different Applications

Created on 11.13
Selecting the right ball valve is crucial for ensuring system efficiency, safety, and longevity. The core of this decision lies in matching valve materials and configurations to specific application conditions. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the selection process.
Different materials offer distinct advantages, making them suitable for specific environments.
1. Material Selection Based on Medium Characteristics
The nature of the fluid being conveyed is the primary factor determining valve material.
• Corrosive Media: For strong corrosive substances like sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or sodium hydroxide, standard metal valves are prone to corrosion. Opt for 316 stainless steel valves (enhanced with molybdenum for superior corrosion resistance) or lined valves, where a  lining provides robust protection against aggressive chemicals. The lining materials can be F4, PTFE or PFA depends on temperatures.

• Cast Iron: Cost-effective with moderate strength, ideal for ambient-temperature, non-corrosive media like water and air in residential plumbing or municipal water supply .
• Cast Steel: High strength and toughness, suitable for medium-to-high pressure, non-corrosive industrial pipelines .

• Stainless Steel (304/316): Excellent corrosion and high-temperature resistance. 316 stainless steel is recommended for chemical processing, while both grades are widely used in food and pharmaceutical industries .

• Plastic (PVC/PTFE): lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and affordable. Suitable for low-pressure, low-temperature applications such as water treatment and agricultural irrigation (limited to ≤70°C).

• Copper: Good corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity, commonly used in drinking water and heating systems, but limited by temperature.

• Special Materials: Titanium alloy valves for extreme corrosive environments (such as in ships or the chemical industry) and PTFE-lined valves for semiconductor and pharmaceutical applications.
